A 10-week certificate course built to close the confidence and policy literacy gaps holding back women in public health leadership

Delivered in partnership with the University of Washington's Department of Global Health (eDGH), WiPHLA makes this certificate course accessible to women in public health leadership across Africa.

Leadership development for women in public health is too often generic — built for a different context, measuring nothing, and changing little. The LMIH course is different.

It's a structured, 10-week certificate programme, delivered through WiPHLA's partnership with the University of Washington's eDGH, built around the specific confidence and leadership gaps facing African women in public health. And unlike most leadership programmes, WiPHLA measures what it does: every cohort completes a pre- and post-course survey, so the impact isn't a claim — it's data.

What Happens at an LMIH Course

  1. A baseline confidence assessment. Every participant completes a pre-course survey establishing their starting point.
  2. 10 weeks of structured, applied learning. Delivered through the University of Washington's eDGH, covering the full leadership competency set — from vision and strategy to policy-to-action.
  3. Mentor matching and peer accountability partnerships. Running in parallel with coursework, alongside onboarding into the wider WiPHLA network.
  4. A closing confidence assessment. Post-course survey re-run, with independent statistical validation of the before-after comparison.
  5. A certificate from the University of Washington eDGH on completion.

March–June 2026

Cohort 1 — Leadership & Management in Health

10-week certificate course delivered in partnership with the University of Washington's eDGH. 50 enrollees; 40 completed the course and were certified. Participants were 92.5% West Africa-based, spanning NGO, government, private sector, and academic roles — 67% with five years or less of public health experience, and 62.5% already holding formal leadership roles.
